Is Fall Protection Training Really Needed for your Technicians

Fall Protection is not a laughing matter

Safety is always a top priority, especially if there are technicians doing work hundreds of feet in the air. Fall protection equipment is always necessary for crews working at any height, but what about fall protection training? Is that needed too?
The answer is yes!

Sobering Facts About Falls

According to OSHA, falls cause more deaths in construction and related industries than any other workplace hazard. There are hundreds of people who loose their lives every year when falling from a height of greater than 6 feet. Measures to keep crews safe are invaluable, and the best way to prevent accidents from heights is fall protection training.

What's Involved in Fall Protection Training?

Surprisingly, there are multiple fall training curriculum's available online, including one created by OSHA, or even better ones offered through professional fall protection supplier companies. Typically, they will include a few different topics including:

  • Location: Understanding where technicians will be working goes a long way toward remaining safe while on the job.
  • Using Fall Protection Equipment: From harnesses to hardhats, platforms and ladders. There is a right and wrong way to use all equipment. Training prevents equipment being used poorly.
  • Maintaining Fall Protection Equipment: All of the things that keep crews safe up in the air wear out over time and need to be maintained and replaced. Understanding when and how keeps people safe.

Implementing the Training

Ensuring that technicians are trained properly involves both having proper training material and actually taking the time to go over the material properly. Companies who set aside time and have the proper helmets and equipment ready for their work at height technicians may have the best success.

Key Components of a High Angle Rope Rescue

High angle rope rescue teams are not needed in every area or EMS organization. Even though you may never need to employ a high angle rope rescue, it's always a good idea to have members of your team who are sufficiently trained to use rope rescue or tactical rescue techniques . No matter how big your organization, having several members of your crew trained and certified in high angle rope or tactical rope rescue situations is a lifesaver if the need ever arises. The Right Training and Certification The key to a successful high angle rope rescue team is to have members who have been trained to use both the best equipment for high angle rescues and the techniques needed to perform such a rescue. For those who are interested, there are classes available that teach both high angle and low angle rescue techniques . Each team member learns how to effectively use each piece of equipment, as well as the many rescue techniques that can be used in specific situations.
